Mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 14, 6 p.m. at Intrust Bank Arena, and prepare your taste buds for delicacies created by our own Mike Grbic. The 2016 Celebrity & Chef Cookoff, a benefit for Wichita’s historic Orpheum Theater, is set to be an exciting event. The culinary part is set up like the popular Iron Chef television show with a fast-pace cooking competition.

Mike Grbic Celebrity ChefGrbic is one of eight local celebrities teaming up with eight local chefs to create culinary delights. He doesn’t yet know who he will be paired up with, but Grbic brings no special culinary talent to the prep table and might not sample as they cook.

“The crazy thing is, I am a vegetarian!” Grbic said. “That’ll put a spin on it! I am happy to be a part of the event supporting The Orpheum Theater. It has years of history in providing family entertainment and I would like to see it have a future as well.”

In addition to delighting your palettes from the celebrity/chef teams, attendees can also enjoy food and drinks from favorite local restaurants, bid on live and silent auction items, and mingle with fellow food lovers and Orpheum Theater supporters.

The Orpheum Theater: A Historical Gem

Built in 1922, the Orpheum Theater is the first atmospheric theater built in the United States. Popular entertainers such as George Burns and Gracie Allen, Houdini, Count Basie and His Orchestra, Bob Hope and many others graced the stage to Wichita audiences. Movies such as “Gone With the Wind” and “Wizard of Oz” were premiered at this unique theater.

Unoccupied for almost two decades, this historic venue was falling apart. Renovation began in the mid-1980s, led by Friends of the Orpheum.

Today, the historic theater features world-class entertainment and serves as a resource for local and national music, dance and theater as well as show popular movies from years ago.
